The characters in the bottom row are being correctly displayed. These 
characters are spares that have not been assigned symbols yet. If you don't 
want them on your palette, edit the Xpp resource file (which typically lives 
in $HOME/app-defaults), find the setting for Xpp.palette, and delete the line 
that contains the unwanted characters and the backslash at the end of the 
previous line.

In the next release, the default palette will not show the spare characters 
since, while they can be of use in obscure situations, they are just 
confusing to most people. In fact, there are only two spares in the 
fortcoming releas4e.
