Rob, Thanks for your response on the above. Unfortunately, my mail tool (kmail) seems to have become unstable, and over the weekend it decided not to tell me about new mail! Also, the cut-and-paste problem disappeared shortly after I asked the question, so I can't try your suggested fix until the next time. Roger
